Gutter Service in Newton, NH

Newton is a small town on the Massachusetts line, ten miles out from Hampstead and roughly a quarter hour away by our estimate. Around Country Pond, seasonal cottages have been converted to year-round homes, and many of them have gutters on only part of the roof or none at all. Adding a missing run is usually where a Newton visit starts.

Newton is small, it borders Massachusetts, and its pond is shared with Kingston. Country Pond is a pond of about 306 acres with homes around it, and a lot of them started life as summer cottages.

Country Pond cottages with half a gutter system

A summer cottage was built to be used from June to September, and gutters were not always part of the plan. Once the place becomes a year-round home, the roof has to deal with winter, and a roof can end up with gutters on one side and a bare eave on the other. A bare eave drops a line of roof water in one strip along the wall. It digs a trench in the soil, splashes mud on the siding and sends water into the foundation.

One reviewer, Jewell, described adding a gutter "to help divert rain from a rotting window." That is the kind of problem a missing gutter can cause, and it is cheaper to solve before the wood rots.

Small lots, short eaves, long extensions

Cottage lots are small, and the pond is close. A downspout that ends two feet from the foundation, on a lot with a lawn that slopes toward the water, sends everything downhill. We prefer to run an extension along the side yard and end on planted or lawn ground well above the shore.

Newton's median home was built in 1983, and 90% are owner-occupied (ACS 2020-24). A high owner-occupied share points to settled homeowners, and they need a system that works in January as well as August.

What a retrofit on a cottage involves

We start by walking each eave and checking the fascia. On a cottage that has been renovated, the fascia may be new, but the extension or the old shed roof often has soft wood. We measure runs and corners, count the downspouts needed and decide where each one can end.

On a very short roof, a single run with one downspout may do. On an L-shaped cottage with a porch, we usually plan more outlets. Either way, you get a written price and a plan for where the water will go. Our page on gutter installation covers the process in more detail.

Services Newton homes ask for

Newton Junction and the Route 108 side

Newton Junction is a village in Newton, where a railroad branch once led off toward Massachusetts, and Route 108 runs from there to the state line. The houses along that stretch are more conventional, with full roofs, regular lots and original gutters that are now old. A cleaning and a seam check go a long way on those.

Reaching Newton from Hampstead

Newton is ten miles out, so these visits are scheduled ahead. We try to pair them with stops in Plaistow, where we have worked, or in Kingston, East Kingston and Danville. The visit itself is a look at each eave, a measurement of the runs and a price in writing. The town is in Rockingham County, on the Massachusetts line.

What customers say about adding gutters

“He called me on Tuesday to tell me that there is rain expected and he would like to move the job up to Wednesday (today). I thought that was very professional of him to reach out and reschedule.”

Gutter questions from Newton

Can you add gutters to a converted Country Pond cottage?

Yes. Some cottages were built without gutters, and adding them is usually straightforward once we see the roofline and fascia. We measure the eaves, plan downspouts so water ends well away from the foundation and shoreline, and give a written price. Photos of each side of the roof help us plan.

Do you serve the Massachusetts-line side of Newton?

Yes, we cover the whole town of Newton, New Hampshire, right up to the state line. If you are on the Massachusetts side of that line, call and ask, since this page is about the New Hampshire town. Newton is about 10 miles out, so visits here are booked ahead.

Where should downspouts discharge on small pond lots?

Away from the foundation and away from the water, onto lawn or planted ground, not bare soil. On a small lot that can mean a longer extension that runs along a side yard. Any regrading near the shore needs a word with the town and the state first. We look at the slope before we recommend an outlet.

What does it cost to add gutters to a cottage with none?

We price each job in writing after seeing the house. A small cottage with short eaves and two or three downspouts costs far less than a large house. Footage, height and the condition of the fascia set the price, and a short run of cottage eave sits at the low end of any published range.
