Fascia and Trim Replacement in Hampstead, NH

Fascia repair in Hampstead, NH starts with the water, because a new board behind the same leak rots again. We take down the wet section, replace what has gone soft and rehang the gutter on sound wood. Fascia is the trim board along the roof edge that your gutter fastens to.

Rot behind a gutter stays hidden until it is well along, since the gutter covers the board it is ruining. Fascia and front trim work sits alongside our other gutter repairs, and it usually turns up in one of two ways: a soft spot found during another repair, or boards replaced as part of a new gutter job.

How far has the rot gone?

The depth of the damage decides the job. We sort it into three levels before we price anything.

What we find What it means What we do
Stained or peeling paint, firm wood Water is reaching the board, but it can be saved Stop the source, then the board can be repainted
Screwdriver sinks in, wood crumbles The fascia board has failed in that length Cut back to sound wood and fit a new board
Rafter ends or roof deck are soft too Rot has moved past the trim Show you, and tell you plainly if it needs a carpenter or roofer

That third row is where we stop and talk. Replacing trim on top of soft framing leaves you with a nice-looking board on a weak base, and we would rather you knew before any money is spent.

What rots fascia, and what has to change first

Fascia rots because water keeps reaching it, and in this climate it dries slowly. BestPlaces shows Hampstead taking 45.9 inches of precipitation in a year, and Dwellics counts about 195 days below 50°F, when a wet board stays wet. The source is usually one of these:

  • A gap at the roof edge. Water rolls behind the gutter and down the board. The answer is gutter flashing and apron repair.
  • A failed corner or end cap. One joint can soak a few feet of wood year after year.
  • Overflow. A run with too few outlets spills at the same spot every storm, and a cut and drop can relieve it.
  • A loose gutter. Each old fastener hole lets water into the wood.
  • Ice. Water backing up under the shingles at the eave can wet the top of the board from above.

Replacing the board comes second. Jewell's review describes the right order. The trouble was rain reaching a rotting window, and the review credits us with fixing "the entire problem". The same thinking applies to any rotted fascia in NH. Our post on rotted fascia and gutters pulling loose shows how quickly one fault leads to the other.

Signs your fascia is failing

Look from the ground first. Paint that peels in sheets, dark streaks under a joint, a wavy line along the board and a gutter that shifts when the downspout is tugged are all warning signs. Inside the attic or under the eave, daylight at the roof edge or stained rafter ends point the same way. None of these proves rot, but each one earns a screwdriver test before any new gutter is hung.

Fascia board replacement: which material?

Each option has real trade-offs, and the best choice depends on the house and how the rest of the trim is finished. Whichever we agree on goes on your written price by name.

Material Good points Watch for
Primed wood Matches older trim and takes paint well Needs every face and cut end sealed, then repainting over the years
PVC fascia Will not rot and needs no paint Moves with temperature, so fastening and joints matter
Aluminum wrap over wood Sharp finish with low upkeep Only belongs over sound wood, since it hides and traps any rot

Never let anyone wrap metal over soft wood. It looks finished, and the rot carries on where no one can see it.

Front trim replacement on a new gutter job

The best time to replace trim is when the gutters are coming off anyway. You avoid taking down gutter twice, and the new run goes up on fresh wood.

Our best proof is a job on a building where Pierre S. had us handle 158 feet of gutter along with the "front trim". That is what a combined job looks like, with trim and gutter planned as one piece of work. If you are already planning gutter replacement, ask us to check the boards at the same time.

From wet board to rehung gutter

  1. We find the water source and agree how it will be fixed.
  2. We take down the gutter section over the damaged wood and set it aside safely.
  3. We probe the board to find where the rot stops, cut back to sound wood and check the rafter ends, showing you anything that goes past the trim.
  4. We fit the new board, sealing cut ends so they do not soak up water.
  5. We fix the source, whether that means an apron, a resealed joint or a new outlet.
  6. We rehang the gutter on new hangers, set the slope and test it with water.

What a full fascia job covers:

  • Removal and disposal of the rotted board
  • A new board in your agreed material, with cut ends sealed
  • Priming of the new wood, with paint matched where it was already painted
  • The source repair, so the board does not rot again
  • Gutter reset on new hangers

Included in that work is cleanup of the old wood and fasteners. Adenilton D. said that we "completed the job on time, and left the area clean", and old rotted trim is the kind of debris you do not want left in a garden bed.

What changes the price of fascia repair in Hampstead

We price fascia after opening the area up enough to see it. If we find more once a board is off, we stop and show you before going further. Expect these to matter most:

  • Linear feet of board, meaning the length measured along the eave
  • Board material and how the finish will be handled
  • Height, and how the ladders or staging can be set
  • How much gutter has to come down and go back up
  • The repair needed to stop the water

Hampstead is our base, and the coverage reaches well past it. Londonderry has plenty of 1970s to 1990s subdivisions, where original boards can be reaching the end of their life. Kingston's older homes bring antique trim to match, so Kingston owners should ask about profile before ordering. Newer roofs in Windham have complex valleys that can send heavy water to one corner of a board.

Rules, permits and lead paint on old trim

Permits are handled town by town in New Hampshire, and we could not confirm whether trim replacement needs one, so ask the town building office. No state gutter license was found. On houses built before 1978, ask any contractor how they handle lead paint, since the EPA has rules for firms that disturb it.

Why Lanes Gutters for trim and rot

Pierre S. had us handle a 158-foot gutter run with front trim, and Jewell credits us with fixing "the entire problem" behind a rotting window. Both jobs began with finding the water. Reviewers also mention fair pricing and a clean site, and your price comes in writing first.

Fascia & Trim Replacement: common questions

How do I tell if my fascia is rotted behind the gutter?

Press it. Standing safely on a ladder, push a screwdriver into the board below or behind the gutter. Firm wood resists, and rot lets the tip sink. From the ground, look for peeling paint, dark streaks, or a gutter that moves when you tug the downspout. On a typical Hampstead home, the north side is often the last to dry out.

Should fascia be replaced before installing gutters?

Yes, if the board is soft. New gutters fasten straight into the fascia, so soft wood means new hangers with nothing to grip. It is also cheaper to do both together, since the gutter is already off the house. When we quote a new gutter job, we check the boards first and list any trim as its own line.

Do you also repair soffits?

Please call and ask before counting on us for that. A customer review confirms our front trim work, but we do not list soffit repair as a standard service, so we will not promise it on this page. Tell us what you are seeing under the eave and we will say plainly whether it is a job we take on.

Can fascia repair be done on just one section of a run?

Yes, if the rot stops there. We cut back to sound wood, ideally landing the joints on a rafter tail, and fit a new length. Spot repairs make sense when one failed seam caused the damage. If soft patches keep turning up along a Hampstead eave, a longer board is often the better price than several short ones.

What happens to the gutter during fascia and trim replacement?

The section over the bad wood comes down so the board can be reached. We then check its seams and hangers, and it goes back up on new fasteners if the metal is sound. If it is not worth rehanging, we will show you why and price new gutter for that stretch as a separate line.

Areas served for fascia & trim replacement

  • Brentwood, NHNewer homes on large wooded lots, where fascia damage usually points to one leaking joint or overflow spot.
  • Windham, NHComplex valleys on Windham's large roofs can drive heavy water into a single corner of the board.
  • Kingston, NHAntique trim near the historic plains district means matching the old profile before any board is ordered.
  • Danville, NHOak and pine litter on wooded lots keeps gutters wet, so boards behind them dry slowly.
  • Rochester, NHOlder downtown homes, about 55 minutes out, so trim visits are booked ahead and grouped with other work.
  • Somersworth, NHDense older multifamily houses, around 50 minutes away, where repairing sound trim often beats replacing everything.
  • Londonderry, NHOriginal boards on 1970s to 1990s subdivisions are reaching the end of their life.
  • Derry, NHThe median Derry home dates to 1983 (ACS 2020-24), so original fascia is past 40 years old.
