Gutter Pitch Correction in Hampstead, NH
Gutter pitch repair in Hampstead, NH resets a run so water drains to the outlet instead of sitting in the trough. Standing water two days after rain is the usual sign. Most corrections mean moving hangers and resetting the line, which leaves the gutter itself in place.

You can test your gutter's slope with a garden hose before you call anyone. This page is part of our gutter repair work around Hampstead, and it starts with that test, because the eye is a poor judge of a slope this small.
The hose test for a gutter not draining
Do this only on a single-story eave you can reach safely, on a dry day, with the gutter already clean. On a second story, skip it and call us.
- Set a garden hose in the end of the run farthest from the downspout.
- Turn it on low and let the water travel the length of the gutter.
- Watch whether it moves steadily to the outlet or stalls and spreads.
- Shut it off and wait 15 minutes.
- Look for pools. A damp film is normal, while water you could measure with your finger is not.
If gutters are holding water in one place, or water backs away from the outlet, the pitch is off. If the water never slows, look elsewhere for your problem. Our guide on how to tell if gutters are pitched wrong has more checks you can do from the ground.

How much gutter slope per foot is enough?
The usual minimum rule of thumb is about 1/4 inch over 10 feet, and about 1/16 inch of drop per foot drains more surely. Here is what the steeper figure means over a run.
| Length of run | Drop at 1/16 inch per foot |
|---|---|
| 10 feet | 5/8 inch |
| 20 feet | 1 1/4 inches |
| 30 feet | 1 7/8 inches |
| 40 feet | 2 1/2 inches |
| 50 feet | 3 1/8 inches |
The table shows why long runs are tricky. Over 40 feet the low end sits well below the high end, and that can look wrong against a straight roofline. It can also leave a gap at the low end. A better answer on a long eave is often a high point in the middle with a downspout at each end. SMACNA gives 50 feet as the practical limit for one downspout.
Why pitch advice varies
Published minimums run from about 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch of drop per 10 feet, so you will find quotes that disagree with each other. Heavy rain areas and long runs call for the steeper end. The fascia often sets the limit, because a gutter that follows an uneven board cannot be pitched without stepping away from it. Ask your installer what drop per 10 feet the quote assumes.
Why do gutters start holding water after years of draining?
Something moved. A gutter does not lose its slope on its own, so finding the cause matters as much as resetting the line.
- Hangers let go. One failed fastener creates a dip, and a dip is a low spot.
- The fascia moved or softened. Wet boards let hangers sink, and a house settles a little over the decades. With a median Hampstead home from 1988 (ACS 2020-24), many houses have had decades to move.
- Ice bent the run. A frozen trough can stretch the gutter down between hangers, and it stays that way.
- It was never right. Some installers follow the fascia, and fascia is rarely level.
If the board itself has gone soft, replace it first. Fascia and trim replacement has to come before any re-pitch, or the new slope will drift within a season.

Standing water in gutters through a New Hampshire freeze
A wet low spot is a nuisance in July and real trouble in January. Dwellics counts about 62 days of snow cover a year in Hampstead, and on many of them the sun melts a little roof snow that then runs into a cold gutter. Any water already sitting in a low spot freezes first, then the ice grows with each melt.
A word of honesty about ice dams. Pitch correction will not cure one. An ice dam starts when attic warmth melts roof snow and the melt refreezes at the cold eave, gutter or no gutter, so the cure sits in the insulation and ventilation. Correct pitch only keeps the gutter from adding to it. Our ice dam prevention page covers that side.
In warmer months the same puddle breeds mosquitoes and holds wet debris against the seams. That shortens the life of the sealant.

Three ways to re-pitch gutters
The right method depends on the length of the run and the state of the metal.
| Approach | Fits when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Reset hangers in place | Straight gutter, sound fascia, short or medium run | Least disruption, but old holes need sealing |
| Take down and rehang | Run has kinks, many old holes, or a bad line | More work, and the result is cleaner |
| Add a high point and second outlet | Long run that cannot hold slope to one end | Adds a cut and drop and a new downspout |
Lowering a gutter can do double duty. Genevieve P. had "gutters lowered and replaced" along with snow guards, and a gutter set slightly lower also gives sliding snow a better path past it. Moving any gutter changes its relationship to the roof edge, so we check that side too. If a gap opens, gutter flashing and apron repair closes it.
How a gutter pitch repair goes on a Hampstead house
- We clean and flush the run so no debris affects the reading.
- We stretch a string line and measure the actual drop along the gutter.
- We test the fascia and hangers where the line is off.
- We mark the new line on the fascia, starting from the high end.
- We release and reset the hangers a section at a time, using fresh fastener locations.
- We seal the old holes, check any joint that moved, then run water from the far end to confirm the trough empties.
Paul S., who hired us to replace gutters, wrote that we "had some recommendations", and you can expect the same here. If we see a fault outside the pitch, we will tell you what it is and let you choose.

Pricing a re-pitch
A re-pitch is priced in writing after we measure. The cost depends on these things:
- Total length of gutter that needs resetting
- Height, roof pitch and ladder access
- Whether the run stays up or comes down
- Any soft fascia or failed seams found along the way
- Whether an extra outlet is the better answer
We cover Hampstead and nearby towns. Long fascia runs on the rural lots in Chester leave more length to keep in line. The 1960s capes around Canobie Lake in Salem have had far longer to move, and wooded lots in Danville drop more debris into any run where water stalls.
Permits and town rules for resetting gutters
Resetting hangers is routine repair, and we could not confirm that any New Hampshire town requires a permit for it. Permits are handled town by town, so ask the building office. No state gutter license was found. Where a re-pitch moves discharge, the town may have its own rules on water crossing property lines.
Why Lanes Gutters for a pitch correction
Paul S. said we "had some recommendations", and Steve K. said we spotted things beyond what the household knew. On a re-pitch we measure first, tell you if the fault is slope, capacity or wood, and put the price in writing before any hanger moves.
Customers on spotting and fixing the real problem
“He did such a great job we asked him to do some repair work on some of the seams. He came back a couple days later and completed that job wonderfully as well.”
“Caio was professional and courteous. He spotted multiple things that were wrong with our gutters beyond what we knew about and performed the repair promptly at an excellent price.”
“We had a gutter put on to help divert rain from a rotting window. Company was responsive and came up with a solution to fix the entire problem rather than put a band aid on it.”

Gutter Pitch Correction: common questions
What is the right pitch for a gutter?
A common minimum is about 1/4 inch over 10 feet, and many installers aim closer to 1/16 inch per foot, or about 5/8 inch over 10 feet, so water keeps moving. Steeper is not always better, because the low end can end up too far below the roof edge. On a long Hampstead colonial eave, splitting the run often works better.
Why is standing water a problem in winter?
Standing water turns into ice, and ice is heavy, swells inside joints and blocks the outlet. Once a low spot freezes solid, meltwater from the roof has nowhere to go, so it spills over the front or runs behind the gutter. A New Hampshire freeze can hold that ice for weeks, loading the hangers the whole time.
Can pitch be corrected without taking gutters down?
Often, yes. If the gutter is straight and the fascia is sound, we can release the hangers a section at a time and reset the slope with the gutter still up. A long seamless run, or one with bends and many old holes, may need to come down so it can go back cleanly. We tell you which after measuring.
Will gutter pitch correction stop my gutters overflowing?
It will if slope is the cause. A gutter that spills at a low spot usually stops once the water can reach the outlet. If it overflows at the outlet end of a clean, well-pitched run, the gutter is short of capacity, and a re-pitch will not change that. We measure first so you pay for the right repair.
How do I know gutter pitch correction is needed instead of a cleaning?
Clean the gutter first, or have it cleaned, then look again after rain. If a puddle returns in the same place with no debris, the slope is the problem. Grit from shingles can also build a small dam near an outlet, so we always flush a run before measuring it. Measuring a dirty gutter gives you a wrong reading.
Areas served for gutter pitch correction
- Chester, NHLarge rural lots and long fascia runs give a small dip more length in which to hold water.
- Derry, NHThe median Derry home dates to 1983 (ACS 2020-24), so houses have had four decades to settle.
- Plaistow, NHLong gutter runs on Route 125 buildings, like the one we cleaned and repaired, hold slope only as well as their hangers.
- Fremont, NHLow wet lots along the Exeter River leave no room for water to linger in the gutter as well.
- Concord, NHOlder South End and Heights homes, median built 1969, about 50 minutes out, are visited by appointment.
- Dover, NHAbout 26% of homes predate 1940 (ACS 2020-24), so rooflines and fascia have had time to move.
- Salem, NHSalem's 1960s capes near Canobie Lake have had far longer for fascia and hangers to shift.
- Danville, NHWooded lots drop debris into any run where water stalls, so we flush before measuring.
