Dover has been a settlement since 1623, when the Hilton brothers settled on Dover Point, and the housing stock still shows it. According to the ACS (2020-24), 26% of Dover homes were built before 1940 and only 53% are owner-occupied. Gutter service in Dover, NH is a lot about repair, trim and older roofs.

Old houses, soft trim

On a house that is a century old, the gutter is only part of the picture. Water that spilled over a clogged or leaking run has often soaked the fascia and eave trim behind it. Before we hang a new run, we check whether that wood is sound.

Where it is not, fascia and trim replacement comes first, then gutter repair or a new run. If the system is past saving, gutter installation with seamless runs is the next step. We say which one your house needs, and write the price down.

The other half of Dover is newer. The median home was built in 1976, so many houses outside the center are likely on a first or second set of gutters. At that age, expect sagging runs, dried seams and downspouts that dump too close to the foundation. Those jobs usually need less than a downtown house does.

Cocheco mill roofs and downtown buildings

Dover's Cocheco River falls powered the Cocheco Manufacturing Company, founded in 1827. The millyard closed in 1937 and is now Cocheco Falls Millworks. Large old brick buildings carry a lot of roof and a lot of water, and downtown lots leave little room for a ladder.

For a business or a multi-unit owner, our commercial gutters page covers cleaning and repair on long runs. Give us the building size and the access, and we plan the visit around them.

Cochecho Falls, hills and the tidal river

Dover's land is not flat. The Cochecho River drops 34 feet at Cochecho Falls, Garrison Hill rises to about 290 feet, and the city's high point, Long Hill, tops 300. The Cochecho and Bellamy rivers drain toward the tidal Piscataqua River. Streets that run downhill toward the water send roof runoff in the same direction.

With only 53% of homes owner-occupied (ACS 2020-24), many Dover buildings are rentals or multi-unit houses where maintenance waits on a call from the tenant. A long run with a clogged downspout puts extra weight on old hangers. Look from the ground for a sagging section, rust stains, or water marks below the eave, and send photos if you can.

Downeaster, Spaulding Turnpike and Millworks

Dover is easy to reach from Route 16, the Spaulding Turnpike, and Amtrak's Downeaster stops at the Dover Transportation Center. The Children's Museum of New Hampshire occupies a former mill building, and the Cocheco Falls Millworks complex fills the old millyard. Large mill-era roofs sit side by side with houses downtown.

The City of Dover's Planning Department runs Inspection Services, which handles building permits. We could not confirm whether routine gutter work needs one, so ask the city before work starts. Buried drain lines need Dig Safe first.

Getting a 45-minute trip scheduled

Dover is the Strafford County seat and about 45 minutes from Hampstead. That makes it a booked-ahead town for us. Trips may be grouped with nearby jobs, so a call a week or two before you need the work gives the best chance of a fit. If a gutter cleaning is due before leaf drop ends, call early.

Near Dover are Durham, Somersworth and Barrington, and the rest of the area is on our Strafford County page.

Gutter questions from Dover

Can you repair gutters and trim on an older Dover house?

Yes. Repairing gutters, replacing fascia and trim, and rehanging runs are all work we do. A Dover house built before 1940 often has soft fascia boards where gutters have leaked for years, so we check the wood before we hang anything new. You get a written price.

How long does it take to get a gutter quote in Dover?

Plan ahead. Dover is about 45 minutes from Hampstead, so visits are booked in advance and may be grouped with other jobs nearby. Call with your address and what you see, and we will pick a time. For something urgent, we will set the earliest visit we can.

Do you do commercial gutter work in Dover?

We handle commercial gutter cleaning and repair, including long runs on large roofs. Tell us the building size, the roof type and access, since downtown buildings can have tight sites. A visit is needed before we write a price, and it is booked ahead given the distance.
