Farmington sits on the Cocheco River below Blue Job Mountain, which reaches 1,350 feet in the southwest. It is a hill town with older mill-era housing near the center and snow that loads roofs through the winter. Both facts matter to a gutter.

What heavy snow does to gutters

A gutter on a snowy roof carries more than water. Snow and ice sliding off the roof pull on the hangers and can bend the trough away from the fascia. Ice weighs about 57 to 60 pounds per cubic foot, so a few feet of frozen buildup is a real load. Our winter gutter protection page covers snow guards, which hold snow on the roof, and the snow guard option in detail.

Ice dams are a different problem. They come from attic heat melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave, with or without gutters. Insulation and ventilation are the real fix, and gutters that are clean and sound help melt water get off the roof.

Mill housing and 1970s homes

Farmington was once the Shoe Capital of New Hampshire, and old mill housing is part of the mix. Across town the median home dates to 1977, and 78% are owner-occupied (ACS 2020-24). Houses of that age often need gutter repair for dried seams and loose hangers, and a gutter cleaning before the first freeze.

A one-hour trip, planned ahead

Farmington is one of the farthest towns we serve, about an hour from Hampstead. We book these trips ahead, and your visit may be grouped with other jobs in the area. That works best if you call a couple of weeks before you need the work, and ideally before the first hard freeze.

When we visit, we look at the roofline, the fascia and the downspouts, and we write the price down.

771 feet in town, 1,350 on the hill

The town's listed elevation is 771 feet, and Blue Job Mountain tops out at 1,350 feet in the southwest, with Blue Job State Forest protecting part of those hills. Rivers cross the lower ground: the Cocheco, Ela, Mad and Rattlesnake drain the town. On a slope like that, water from a roof runs downhill, and a downspout aimed at the foundation of a lower neighbor is a problem for them.

The north side of a house stays shaded, so snow and ice sit there longer. Look at the north eave after a thaw. If the gutter is bowed, ice has been working on it. Any fix has to start with the hangers and fascia, because a new gutter on the same soft board will fail the same way.

The village center, Route 75 and the 1875 fire

The village center sits at the junction of Routes 75 and 153, and Route 11 also crosses town. A fire in 1875 destroyed much of the town center. Shoemaking made Farmington the "Shoe Capital of New Hampshire," and some of the housing from that era is still in use.

Farmington has a Code Enforcement Department that issues building permits, including a minor permit application. We could not confirm whether routine gutter work needs one, so ask the town. Buried drain lines need Dig Safe first.

Henry Wilson's hometown and its neighbors

Farmington is the birthplace of Vice President Henry Wilson. Routes 11, 75 and 153 cross the town, and it borders Rochester, Milton and Barnstead, among others. Nearby pages are Rochester and Barrington, and the rest of the area is on our Strafford County page.

What customers say

“He did such a great job we asked him to do some repair work on some of the seams. He came back a couple days later and completed that job wonderfully as well.”

Gutter questions from Farmington

When should Farmington homeowners clean their gutters before winter?

After most leaves are down and before the ground and the trough freeze, usually late October into November. A gutter full of wet leaves freezes into a heavy block that strains hangers all winter. Because Farmington trips are booked ahead, call early in the fall to get a date.

Should I get snow guards on a Farmington roof?

If snow slides off your roof onto a walkway, door or the gutters, snow guards are worth a look. They hold snow on the roof in smaller loads. A hill town gets heavy snow, and a sliding sheet can tear a gutter off. Call us with the roof type and we will say what fits.

How far is Farmington from your Hampstead base?

About an hour and 42 miles by our estimate, so we book Farmington visits ahead and may group them with other jobs nearby. Call before the snow flies if you can. If it is urgent, say so and we will book the earliest visit we can.
