Gutter Service in Portsmouth, NH
We cover Portsmouth from our Hampstead base, roughly 45 minutes away by our estimate, for brick rows, clapboard houses, condo buildings and downtown commercial roofs. A third of the city's homes were built before 1940, and its Historic District Commission has reviewed gutter changes before. On an older property, the first job is often learning what the district will accept, and what the roof edge has to carry away.

Gutter service in Portsmouth, NH starts with a question we cannot answer for you: does your building sit inside a historic district? If it does, what goes on the roof edge may not be only your call.
Check the Historic District Commission before you pick a gutter
Portsmouth's Historic District Commission has ruled on gutters before. Its published action sheets show approvals that came with conditions, such as matching the profile of the existing gutters or limiting the material. We cannot tell you what the commission will allow on your street. Ask the city's Planning Department first, then bring us the answer so the written price fits it.

Brick cornices and built-in gutters
Many older brick buildings carry the gutter inside the roof edge, lined and tucked behind the cornice. These are often called box gutters. They are hard to see from the street and easy to neglect until a stain shows on the ceiling below. We have not confirmed box gutters as a service, so call and describe the building before you plan around us.
For the exposed gutters on the rest of the city, seamless aluminum in a color that suits the trim is what we install.
What the 1959 median house tells you
The median Portsmouth home dates to 1959, and 33% were built before 1940 (ACS 2020-24). That mix means a lot of small capes and old clapboard houses, many on compact lots where a downspout has little room to discharge. Expect tired seams, sagging runs and downspouts that dump against a foundation or a shared line.
- Seamless gutters to replace sectional runs on mid-century capes
- Gutter repair for sags, loose hangers and leaking seams before you commit to a full replacement
- Gutter guards on three-story houses where cleaning by ladder is a chore
- Commercial gutter work for downtown storefronts and office buildings

Puddle Dock and the closely built old streets
Strawbery Banke Museum fills about 10 acres of the old Puddle Dock neighborhood, named for a tidal inlet. A nonprofit formed in 1958 to stop the area being cleared for urban renewal, and the museum opened in 1965. The streets around it show an old Portsmouth block: wooden houses a few feet apart and eaves close to the sidewalk.
For a gutter job that means narrow ladder footing, little room for a downspout and neighbors who deserve a word first. We walk the property and say what a safe setup needs before we write the price.
Mill Pond, the South End and wet ground
Portsmouth's own resilience studies looked at the South End, North Mill Pond and South Mill Pond for sea-level rise and storm surge. In 2025 the city was working with UNH and Strawbery Banke to monitor South End groundwater. A gutter cannot fix a high water table.
A gutter controls only the roof's share of the water. On low ground, a downspout that empties beside the foundation adds to a problem the soil already has, so we check where each one lands and whether a longer downspout run can carry it elsewhere. Call Dig Safe before trenching.
Landlords, condo boards and managers
Portsmouth is only 52% owner-occupied, well below most of the towns around it. Tenants report the problem, and a landlord or association signs off on the fix. For that setup, we send a written price per building and note roof heights and downspout counts so a board can compare options. Our HOA and condo gutter service page covers how that works.

Permits and the Inspection Department
Portsmouth's Inspection Department is at City Hall, 1 Junkins Avenue. The city's permits page says roofing needs a building permit. We could not confirm whether gutter-only work needs one, so ask the department, especially for a re-roof or a building in the historic district.
A 31-mile trip, booked ahead
Portsmouth is one of our longer runs from Hampstead. Visits are booked ahead and may be grouped with other nearby jobs, so give us your address, the number of stories and what you are seeing. We measure the runs, look at the fascia and hangers, and put the price in writing.
If you are near the water, New Castle and Rye are close neighbors, and Newington shares a border with the city. The wider picture is on our Rockingham County page.

Gutter questions from Portsmouth
Do Portsmouth historic district rules apply to a gutter replacement?
They can. The city's Historic District Commission has reviewed gutter changes before, sometimes with conditions on material or profile. Whether your building needs review depends on where it sits, so ask Portsmouth's Planning Department before you order anything. Once you know the limits, we can write a price to fit them.
Can you quote gutters for a Portsmouth condo or rental building?
Yes. Call with the number of buildings, the roof heights and who controls access. Only 52% of Portsmouth homes are owner-occupied, so many addresses have a landlord or a board making the decision. A written price for each building keeps that approval simple.
How long is the drive to Portsmouth from Hampstead?
About 31 miles, or roughly 45 minutes by our estimate. Portsmouth is far enough that we book visits ahead and may group them with other Seacoast jobs. Tell us what is leaking or hanging, and we will set the earliest visit we can.
Services in Portsmouth
- Gutter Service
Start here if you only know water is going the wrong way. On closely built Portsmouth blocks we trace where each eave sheds, then say whether it needs cleaning, repair or new runs.
- Seamless Gutters
Mid-century capes and clapboard houses here often carry sectional runs that leak at the joints. A seamless replacement in a trim-matched color keeps seams to the corners.
- Commercial Gutters
Downtown storefronts and offices share walls and sidewalks. We ask about roof height, lift access and tenant notice first, then price each building in writing.
- Gutter Repair
A sag, a pulled hanger or one weeping seam on an older Portsmouth house is often a local fix. We check the fascia behind it first, because hangers need sound wood to hold.
- Gutter Guards
Three-story houses and rentals where nobody wants a tall ladder are the case for guards. We explain what each type covers and what still needs a yearly look.
- Gutter Guard Cleaning
Guards installed years ago on a Portsmouth rental or condo can clog with grit and seed. We clear them, check the trough beneath and tell you whether they are still working.
